January 30th. Wednesday

Everytime I start to travel, I get an urge to write it down. The only time I have ever done it, was costa rica… and I sort of put that up on the web… but basically I never showed it to anyone to read. Though when I did read it, it was super funny.

Anyways - I’ll take a stab again this time.

Jan 30th. Woke up… breakfast at hamburger mary’s, did some work, cleaned my house, worked Ava at Burnout a few times, and then it was time to goooo.

My airport shananigans have started off poorly. My dreams of charming my way up to business class were dashed as soon as a saw the two people manning the check in gate. They were neither young attractive ladies (who I had planned to woo into upgrading me), nor were they gay. They were more like asain re-incarnations of jaba the hut in human form. Barely. And to top it off, they looked cranky.

Little did I know.

The asshat at the check in, decided he wanted to see the contents of my 30kg board bag. Now - keep in mind.. 30kg is how much you are allowed for a snowboard bag! So I showed him, he decided that the few shirts (he didn’t see the hard drive), and crap that were not snowboarding specific… he decided that A) they did not count as sporting equipment, and B) they must weight 7kg. Now I am a poor estimator… but I’m pretty sure that was a bullshit estimation.

Anyways - 90 bucks later I sat my cranky ass down and had some very expensive but very tasty pizza.

After that I went and got my complimentary massage by the nice security guard behind the metal detector. He was thorough - and I was deemed terror-free.

Then as my routine dictates, it was time for my “airport junkie” bit. To the public bathroom I go, where I huddle in a stall and inject myself with my blood thinners. Funny thing is, every single time when I leave the stall… I always kinda hide the syringe that I am about to chuck in the trash… cause I feel weird about having it.

Now with my blood thinner fix, I sit here… waiting to go wait inside an airplane for 9 hours… so that I can wait in London for 6 hours.. so that I can wait on some other plane. Lets just say I am waiting till I am at Bernard’s place in Bern tomorrow evening.

Go blogging bognarly!

I am currently working on writing some interaction/high level patterns for social systems with Andrew Simpson. These will serve as base content for a wiki of such patterns that we will be launching as we develop Rilli. These patterns are part of what Rilli is based on.

So, I think I’ll be posting each pattern that I write about here as I try to make these things. I would love feedback and criticism and additions and suggestions on everything from what I am writing to how I am structuring it.

So here is “Quick Wins”.

Use Contexts

This pattern can be particularly useful for sign-ups, data entry processes and for helping users learn a new system. The concept is to provide positive reinforcement, encouragement and maintain flow by breaking tasks and processes down into short steps.

Our case studies have indicated that the barrier to entry on many social networking sites is quite high. There were many mental models unique to each service for users to grasp and few standards being set or followed. For example – understanding how to browse photos on Facebook does not help you understand how to browse photos on Flickr and vica versa. In order to minimize the barrier of use in your system, you can map out mental models and patterns using Journey Frameworks and also build on existing standards and user mental models. This can help gauge the rate at which you are introducing new concepts and elements, then scale the entry process accordingly.

Base Concepts

One of the concepts this revolves around is Flow, a concept proposed by psychologist Mihály Csiksentmihályi (a Hungarian name pronounced “Me high - Chicks sent me high-y!”) and referenced across a variety of fields.

“Flow is the mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing, characterized by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity.”

Wikipedia

It can be also referred to being in the zone, on the ball, in the groove, or even stoked - if you will. Another way to put it would be,

“…being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.”

Mihály Csikszentmihályi

By helping users maintain their flow we are able to provide a more pleasurable experience and create motivation and energy during normally uninteresting or difficult processes. Users feel they are reaching milestones and getting the reward of productivity when larger tasks are segmented into smaller, easy-to-achieve tasks.

This concept is not only useful for design but for company dynamics. 37 Signals has written many articles about their unconventional work methods that avoid interruptions, face to face time, meetings and other things that disrupt productivity and flow. Along these lines they have put together a very extensive and informative post on flow.

37 Signals - All About Flow

Jeffery Veen also talks about similar concepts for building easy to use CMS systems and other systems for first time users. Start with easy to achieve tasks which are rewarding to complete. This gets the user feeling confident and gives them time to get into flow before hitting any major road blocks.

“Give first-time users a series of quick wins that become increasingly complex. …I want to feel successful with your system within a few minutes. I don’t want to you to present the stunning power at my fingertips until I’m comfortable with my surroundings. Please save the content ranking, on-the-fly PDF creation, community forums, and user polls for later. I may eventually want that stuff, but not the first time I log in.”

Jeffery Veen

Applying It

There are many ways Quick Wins can be applied. Here are a few.

Truncated Initial Processes

Data entry systems such as sign up processes, account management, forms, etc should require only the absolute minimum of content and allows users to enter more data later on their own. By keeping initial time investments to a minimum you give your user a much lower level of commitment to, for example, join your service. Lowering the barriers to entry is important, because once they are in – they will slowly get emotionally invested in your service and your brand. “But we need more then just the minimal data!” you say? Rich input will come with buy-in into the system. Once a user is excited about your service, they will happily spend time building their profile or account information.

Figure 1

Vimeo does a very good job of this (Figure 1), and even Facebook. While their sign up process is quite long, each step is not more then about 5 fields long. You never get a page of endless fields to make you question your time investment. Furthermore, the data entry potential on Facebook is huge. Profiles have incredible amounts of information in them, and once users are hooked and buy-in is achieved, they happily fill it all out.

Patterning System Concepts

Quick Wins can be used to help a user learn how to use a system in an intuitive way that progressively builds on each new concept he or she has to learn. By creating a list of new concepts or mental models a user has to learn to operate your system, you can then try and design the entry model so that the are only exposed to one or 2 of these concepts or “interaction patterns” at a time. One good way to do this is through Journey Frameworks.

Journey Frameworks are information models that overlay the roles, thoughts and needs of the various stake-holders throughout an interaction. You can use journey frameworks to map the system entry experience. First identify several different ways a user could find and enter the system. For example, some of the points of entry could be through direct url access to the front page, email invite, google search, etc. You can then map all the touch points as the user starts to experience the system and the brand. At each touch point consider the users’ concerns and the designers’ concerns. Also note which of the interaction patterns were present at each touch point. Using this information model you can begin to designing methods of entry where the users are introduced to only a few patterns at each touch point. This can reduce cognitive load and allow them to build on their previous knowledge at each subsequent touch point.

A Journey Frameworks from the early stages of Rilli Prototyping (Figure 2):

For more examples of Journey Frameworks in use you can find a case study of IDEO using one to redesign the hospital experience.

My mother has worked at Vancity for 13 years. She started out as a human cash machine, and quickly worked her way up to one bad ass bank manager. Her office is decked out with awards like freakin wallpaper, she makes banking so bloody easy for me. Every time I walk into her branch, you can tell her co-workers have immense respect for her, and I’m very proud of her. Plus, I can always pull out the line “Do you know who I AM?! Do you know who my mother is?!”, if anyone gives me shit.

When I was a kid, I hated having a Vancity bank account. There were practically no branches or bank machines that didn’t charge me a buck so I could take out 5. Paying a buck when you only had 5 to take out really hurt. However, things have changed. I now have more then 5 bucks in my bank account, I rarely use cash, and Vancity has matured into a company with values and actions similar to what I hope to build Rilli on.

Vancity works towards building profits, socially responsible projects and environmental projects. Their achievements in all of these areas are pretty impressive and constantly developing. This is much like operating with a Triple Bottom Line, however I do not know if they actually do, or are officially aiming for that or not but I do know that will be Carbon Neutral by 2010. None the less, with a recent sexy rebrand spanning all media and space design, a new socially and environmentally responsible change driven campaign, slick contextual marketing, and some really awesome programs in place (some for a long time, I just haven’t even known about them) they are making me happy in several ways.

Photo: Helen Carruthers
Note: Apparently this billboard has a permanent desk and outlets that are connected to the solar powered batter at the base of it. So… if you wanted to charge your laptop right next to a construction site… you… could….

Here are some cool things that they do:

Enviro Visas (all of them are enviro visas)
On all of their Visas, 5% of all profits they make goes towards local environmental projects. Local projects can apply for the funding, and members vote to decide which ones get chosen.

Shared Growth Accounts
A Shared Growth chequing account is like a regular chequing account plus one extra benefit: the balance is directed to a deposit pool used to invest in meaningful social, environmental and economic benefits to local or global communities. You always have guaranteed access to your cash money, but it is also used for awesome things.

Peer Lending
Peer lending is a credit arrangement in which a small group of borrowers guarantee each other’s loans in lieu of providing collateral. The standard barriers acquiring loans that people encounter at other lending institutions — lack of collateral, poor personal credit history or full-time employment — do not necessarily apply under this program. Instead, it is based on commitment and ability rather than assets.

They do other cool stuff as well like bike sharing programs and so on and so forth. Also they have really sexy print work. :) Props to TBWA Vancouver.

You can peep some more info at The Vancity Website.

Despite the fact that I was recently beginning to think Facebook may be doing some new and semi-useful and meaningful interactions through their site. I have been convinced back to my old belief, which is that Facebook in many ways is still just a more usable mySpace. Allow me to show you exhibit A.

I’ll keep it short. This guy, was amongst a group of really cruel, bad times, gangsta wannabe (his idol of choice was Eminem), violent, bunch of sad individuals. I am not even going to go into the kind of stupid things they used to do.

I once interfered with one of their cruel acts - and said some things that “offended” this person in particular.

About a week later I was walking to a buddies house in the middle of the night on Burrard street, drunk. This kid ran up behind me, clocked me on the back of the head with a little pipe…. and then took me down. Then the rest of his awesome friends joined him and they did quite a number on my face… with their feet.

That’s about the short of it… and THEN today I get a friend invite from him… the same day the dentist rips out all my wisdom teeth. So that’s kind of funny. Anyways, my reply:

Mind boggling.

UPDATE: See comments for some clarification on my ideas in this doped up post.

UPDATE: He eventually got back to me and apologized. I guess you can change in 6 years, I hope he has.

I found this article called 10 Future Web Trends on Pixel Surgeon, it is an article written by someone named Richard MacManus. I found it so ridiculous, and I am so extremely cranky because of pain in my jaw (no idea what it is yet), that I decided to post about it.

This guy, has the incredible insight to predict web trends for the next TEN YEARS. Right. Let’s just think about where the web was 10 years ago. Even 2 or 3 years would be pushing it in my opinion. Then to top that off, he goes on to list 10 current/fairly-established/old trends around today. And these are the trends of the “next decade”. I mean, sure, some of them are just emerging and will continue to develop over time. But I was expecting at least one or two ideas I hadn’t heard of or kinds of services which I am not ALREADY USING. The only one that has any relevance to the title of the article is perhaps number 9 “International Web”. Because it will take some time for developing nations and some governments to open up access and all that.

Still, next decade my ass.

This weekend I was reading 2007 Burton Catalog. I was reading the ladies section because I am doing some product design for women lately, and I wanted to poke around for some inspiration for patterns and stuff.

I found something that I thought was a pretty lame move on Burton’s part. There are several tips peppered through out the ladies section, and there was one called “Tips to Get Rad”.

I figured it was tips on how to get your head in the game when your just not feeling it, or whatever. I was curious what this would sound like coming from a girl, so I read it. Here is what it said:

“Tips To Get Rad

Ever feel like something just isn’t right?!

You can’t find your steez, which is causing the “gap” between your beanie and goggles to widen. Your confidence is at an all-time low and you just don’t know what to do?! How are you possibly going to get that snowboarder HUNK to notice you?! Don’t be SAD, it’s time to…

“GET RAD!”

1. Starting the day off with a hot beverage is KEY! Warm up that body!

2. Always have SPF captstick in your pocket. Sheer or tinted is a perk to make those lips irresistible!

3. Layering correctly is key! Make sure to have enough layers to keep you warm, but at the same time, don’t forget to have a tank top underneath. If those rays come out, it’s BRONZING time!

4. Music is a MUST! The beats give you the rhythm, the rhythm… gives you the style.. the style gets you.. the HUNK!

5. Gum or mints in the pocket.. PLUS!

6. NEVER FORGET… to WEAR YOUR SMILE!! ;)”

Alright, so I’ll just give you a minute to clean the vomit off of your mouth.

I found this pretty surprising coming from Burton, a company run by snowboarders and staffed with really awesome people. Sure, they are really huge, but the head of the company still rides 100+ days a year. It’s the fact that they are actually run by snowboarders and in tune with the sport that has made them so ridiculously successful. Well, that and the fact that they were one of the firsts. But they have always had their branding and design down pat. Then I read this, which to any person that actually snowboards because they love it is pretty insulting. I would think that if I was a girl I would be even more insulted - this suggests that girls are not on the mountain to ride, but to look pretty, and ofcourse to find some HUNKS. Unreal.

I guess there are definitly enough adolescent girls out there that this would be appealing to, but I think they should be careful about alienating the real snowboarders that have got the company to where it is today.

By focusing businesses on upcoming Canadian talent in the areas of design, photography and new media we can begin creating massive amounts of exposure for the cutting edge work being produced in our country. Furthermore, businesses that operate on international scale can provide excellent opportunities to expose Canadian talent, and in turn gain exposure for themselves by having Canadian designers create and communicate for them.

Over 300 guests attended an evening gala at the Vancouver-based art gallery, Sugar and Sugar, a unique, multi-level designer space.

The exhibition included print work, photography, industrial design, product design, fashion, traditional media, as well as select interactive installations. All pieces were original work donated and created by Canadian artists, designers and photographers, as well as some renowned international designers such as Stefan Sagmeister and John Fluevog.

The event also featured keynote speakers: Stewart Butterfield, Russell Taylor (Architect/Senior Lecturer) and Ron Wakkary (Designer/Associate Professor) discussing creativity, innovation, and the future of Canadian design culture.

Breakdown of Process

Problem
The constraints on the Re:design event were tight from the start: less than 2 months, no upfront funding and very limited human resources. With the concept being formed only months before the latest possible event date, time was tight. Though the profits from the event went to local students studying abroad, all initial funding came from the event management team. With time tight, personal reputations and dollars on the line, the event had to come together like clockwork and go off without a hitch.

Solution

We began by branding the event in order to create a strong, unified image to present to our potential supporters. The branding effort extended past aesthetics to values and goals which would show through in all our written communications. To facilitate our promotion we created a website, fliers, b+w posters with spray-paint, 3′x6′ billboards, e-fliers, a media kit and a stationary and business card set.

We then requested support from design legends and local design heros to add gravity and credibility to the event. We succeeded in gaining submissions and funding from design greats such as Stephen Sagmeister, John Fluevog and winning Stewart Butterfield (Flickr) as a keynote speaker.

From there we began promoting the event to potential participants. A great deal of our promotion took place online through design community sites including NewsToday and DiK. We canvassed local campuses looking for student work to compliment the professional work that would be shown. After a selection process we accepted pieces from over 30 artists.

Over 100 members of the media were sent press releases and media kits. Our efforts to find sponsorship funding on extremely short notice landed us support from companies including VanCity Bank and Ticketmaster.

The exhibition included media installations, paintings, print work, industrial design, fashion design, photography and 3 talks on various aspects of design. The event sold out the 300 person event space and succeeded in raising its target sum for local design students.
Introducing Bounce

Bounce was a conceptual study into the interactions within future mobile technologies. Specifically, the study looked at a next generation mobile service which would augment social interaction. The project currently exists as a scenario detailing interactions and a schematic drawing detailing the interface. Both the service and the interface incorporate technologies that are not yet fully formed though their component technologies are already in use.

Click to see full schematic poster (PDF).

The Bounce System

Bounce is a next generation mobile service which combines several leading edge technologies to augment social interaction. The scenerios and schematics in this project are a mockup of a conceptual interface in the form of a cell phone like mobile device.

The service leverages work being done in social networking applications such as Dodge Ball. These services allow users to notify other users of their physical location via triangulation to encourage interaction. Bounce takes this one step further by analyzing the routines and patterns of users to divine opportunities for social interaction. This predictive ability makes the service much more meaningful, as it allows for much more spontaneous interaction.

Spatial annotation services offer users the ability to leave virtual messages in physical space. These services often use codes which must be physically left in a space and then inputted into mobile devices to retrieve messages. Bounce takes this to the next level using location triangulation and thereby allowing the process to take place entirely in a virtual plane. This allows for communication to be better targeted to friends and groups in a way that invites further communication.

The interface of the Bounce device is based on two emergent technologies: tactile feedback and OLED displays.

Tactile feedback uses mechanical pressure to create sensations such as resistance as well as physical form. This allows the Bounce device to reform its physical shape in subtle ways. This dynamic form combined with a large, flexible OLED display covering the usable side of the device allows it’s interface to be fully dynamically contextual.

The result is a service that is dynamic and contextual in both form and function. Bounce.

A Breakdown of Process: Problem, Proposal, Scenerio

Problem

Current spacial annotation services and mobile social services are not accessible to the mass in part due their lack of fit into people’s everyday lives. They are not predictive, spontaneous of flexible enough.

Proposal

Bounce is a mobile social service for young urbanites. Through triangulation, predictive routine mapping, spacial annotation and profile matching it encourages spontaneous social interactions in people’s everyday lives.

The SIAT, School of Interactive Arts and Technology, branding project was a several month ethnographic study into the emerging culture in this unique school enviroment. This is covered more in depth in the Case Study. The resulting product was a brand that begins to get at values and beliefs of the developing culture at this relatively young school. The brand was then manifested in graduate and undergraduate program brochures, lifestyle photography, posters and a website.
