Introducing Bounce

Bounce was a conceptual study into the interactions within future mobile technologies. Specifically, the study looked at a next generation mobile service which would augment social interaction. The project currently exists as a scenario detailing interactions and a schematic drawing detailing the interface. Both the service and the interface incorporate technologies that are not yet fully formed though their component technologies are already in use.

The Bounce System

Bounce is a next generation mobile service which combines several leading edge technologies to augment social interaction. The scenerios and schematics in this project are a mockup of a conceptual interface in the form of a cell phone like mobile device.

The service leverages work being done in social networking applications such as Dodge Ball. These services allow users to notify other users of their physical location via triangulation to encourage interaction. Bounce takes this one step further by analyzing the routines and patterns of users to divine opportunities for social interaction. This predictive ability makes the service much more meaningful, as it allows for much more spontaneous interaction.

Spatial annotation services offer users the ability to leave virtual messages in physical space. These services often use codes which must be physically left in a space and then inputted into mobile devices to retrieve messages. Bounce takes this to the next level using location triangulation and thereby allowing the process to take place entirely in a virtual plane. This allows for communication to be better targeted to friends and groups in a way that invites further communication.

The interface of the Bounce device is based on two emergent technologies: tactile feedback and OLED displays.

Tactile feedback uses mechanical pressure to create sensations such as resistance as well as physical form. This allows the Bounce device to reform its physical shape in subtle ways. This dynamic form combined with a large, flexible OLED display covering the usable side of the device allows it’s interface to be fully dynamically contextual.

The result is a service that is dynamic and contextual in both form and function. Bounce.

A Breakdown of Process: Problem, Proposal, Scenerio

Problem

Current spacial annotation services and mobile social services are not accessible to the mass in part due their lack of fit into people’s everyday lives. They are not predictive, spontaneous of flexible enough.

Proposal

Bounce is a mobile social service for young urbanites. Through triangulation, predictive routine mapping, spacial annotation and profile matching it encourages spontaneous social interactions in people’s everyday lives.
